If your site serves photos as JPG, converting them to WebP is close to free performance. WebP's photo compression is simply a generation newer than JPG's — Google's benchmark numbers put it around 25–34% smaller at equivalent visual quality, and real-world galleries often do better. A JPG is already lossy, so re-encoding it to WebP is technically a second lossy generation.
