Do the WASM codecs upload my image while optimizing?+
No. OxiPNG and MozJPEG run as WebAssembly inside your browser tab — your image's pixels are encoded on your own CPU and the result downloads straight to disk. No server ever sees the file.
Is the PNG optimization lossless?+
Yes. OxiPNG performs lossless re-compression — the pixels are identical, only the file encoding is made smaller.
What JPG quality should I choose?+
A value of 80 is a great starting point. Higher values (up to 95) keep more detail at a larger size; lower values (down to 50) save more space with some visible loss.
Should I use Optimize or Compress for my image?+
Use Compress when you need to hit a target file size (say, a 500 KB form limit). Use Optimize for the best encoding at a quality you choose — lossless OxiPNG for graphics, MozJPEG for photos.
Does optimizing also remove EXIF metadata?+
Yes. The output is re-encoded from the decoded pixels, so the optimized file carries no EXIF, GPS or camera data — a nice privacy bonus on top of the size savings.
Why do OxiPNG and MozJPEG need the served app?+
The codecs are WebAssembly modules fetched from a CDN, which browsers block on the file:// protocol. Use pixkit.com, or launch the app with start.command and open it via http://localhost, and optimization works.
Will the optimized file always be smaller?+
Usually, yes. Already-optimized images may not shrink much, and for PNGs full of photographic detail a quality JPG is often far smaller. The panel reports the exact before/after size so you can compare.

MozJPEG produces visibly cleaner JPGs at smaller sizes than standard encoders. Use the quality slider (50–95) to balance file size against fidelity — around 80 is an excellent default for photos and complex images. After every run the status line prints the before and after sizes with the percentage saved, so you can re-run at a different quality until it's right.
