How does the background remover work?

PixKit removes backgrounds two ways, both on your device. A local edge-detect eraser flood-fills solid backgrounds to transparency, tuned with Tolerance and Feather sliders. For complex photos, the optional AI cutout downloads a segmentation model once, then computes the mask entirely in your browser — your pixels are never uploaded.

A private image toolkit, not just a watermark remover

Clean the Gemini sparkle, then finish the job — crop, resize, convert and adjust without uploading a single pixel.

Lossless watermark removal

Reverse-alpha math restores the true pixels under the Gemini logo — no blur, no AI guesswork.

Crop & resize

Crop to any aspect ratio with draggable handles, then resize to exact pixels or quick scales.

Convert & compress

Export to PNG, JPG or WebP with a quality slider and a live file-size estimate.

100% private

Every tool runs locally with undo/redo. Nothing is uploaded — it even works offline.

Remove a background in 3 steps

One click for simple backgrounds, one more for AI-grade cutouts.

Add your image

Drop, paste or pick a photo — it opens on the canvas with the Remove Background panel ready.

Erase the background

Click Remove background for an AI cutout (choose the Best or Fast model), or use Quick erase: Auto wipes simple backgrounds from the edges, Click erases the areas you tap, and Restore paints mistakes back. Tune Tolerance and Feather for the edge.

Export with transparency

Keep the transparent background or fill it with a solid color, then export as PNG or WebP — JPG has no transparency and would flatten it onto a color.

What people cut backgrounds out for

Product photos

Clean cutouts of items on white or transparent backgrounds for marketplaces, shops and catalogs — without paying per image.

Profile pictures

Cut yourself out of a busy photo, fill a clean color behind, then circle-crop the result for a polished avatar.

Stickers and memes

Isolate a subject to a transparent PNG that drops onto any background in chats, decks or edits.

Slides and documents

Place logos, screenshots and objects into presentations without the ugly white box around them.

Thumbnails

Pop a person or product over a bold color or gradient — the classic YouTube-thumbnail look, done locally.

Logos from scans

Wipe the white paper background off a scanned or exported logo so it works on any surface.

Frequently asked questions

Everything about removing backgrounds with PixKit.

How do I remove the background from an image?+
Drop your image in, open the Remove BG tool, and click Auto-remove edges — or click background areas to erase them. For tricky photos, use AI cutout. Then download a transparent PNG.
Is the background remover free?+
Yes — completely free, no account, no watermarks, and no usage limits.
Does my photo get uploaded for the AI cutout?+
No. The AI model file downloads to your browser once (which is why it needs an internet connection the first time), but the segmentation itself runs on your device — your photo's pixels are never sent anywhere.
What's the difference between the Best and Fast AI models?+
Best uses the full-precision model for the cleanest edges on hair, fur and fine detail. Fast uses a compressed version that downloads and runs quicker — a good default on slower connections or older machines.
Does it work on photos of people?+
The local eraser is best for solid/simple backgrounds. For people and busy scenes, use the AI cutout, which produces a much cleaner edge.
Can I replace the background with a color instead of transparency?+
Yes. After removing the background, pick a swatch or any custom color in Fill background and click Fill — useful for listings or ID photos that require a plain white or colored backdrop.
Can I remove backgrounds from many photos at once?+
Yes — drop a folder and use Apply to all → Remove BG in the batch bar. It runs the fast edge eraser on every image (best on solid backgrounds), and you can export the whole set as a ZIP.
What format keeps transparency?+
Export as PNG or WebP — both preserve the transparent background. JPG does not support transparency and will fill it with a color.

Free online background remover

PixKit removes image backgrounds for free, entirely in your browser. For solid or simple backgrounds — product shots, logos, icons, and clean AI images — the local magic eraser detects the background from the edges and wipes it to transparency instantly. For complex photos with people or detailed scenes, the optional AI cutout produces a studio-quality alpha mask.

Two engines, one panel

The quick eraser flood-fills from the image edges, so anything connected to the border that matches the background color becomes transparent — the Tolerance slider (5–140) controls how loose the color match is, and Feather (0–4) softens the cut edge. The AI cutout runs a segmentation model in two flavors: Best for maximum edge quality on hair and fine detail, or Fast for a lighter, quicker model.

Fix-ups without starting over

If the automatic pass misses a spot, Click mode erases just the region you tap, and Restore paints back anything that was removed too eagerly. When you'd rather have a solid backdrop than transparency, pick a fill color from the swatches (or any custom color) and hit Fill — handy for ID-style photos and product listings that require white.

Private and account-free

Your images are not uploaded to PixKit. The fast eraser runs offline; the optional AI feature downloads its model from third-party infrastructure and performs inference on your device. There are no accounts, usage credits, or added watermarks, and browser memory limits still apply.
